Processing

Tea factory

After harvest, farmers collect the fresh green tea leaves in baskets and take them to the Maw Shan factory.
Maw Shan Factory is located in southern Shan State.

Maw Shan started as tea traders before becoming processors too. We saw the market demands for better quality and in 2013, decided to build our own tea factory near our farmers' plantations.

We set up our tea factory on our ancestral lands in Pindaya. Our company works closely with our tea growers. Each parcel of tea, however small, is given separate constructive feedback, to help our growers produce the finest tea leaves that reach premium prices.

All farmers’ products are recorded and traceable. This process also ensures our premium lines are 100% top grade leaves.

For export markets, we developed processing systems, such as withering, rolling, drying temperature and size of the tea leaves. Since then, we have developed our tea quality with our own research and development.

Oxidation process

Tea processing is highly skilled, as all tea – white, red, green, and black – are from the same leaf. The difference is the level of oxidation which starts as soon as the leaf is plucked from the plant.

At the factory, we master and control the oxidation. A white tea is barely oxidized, keeping a soft, silvery appearance while a black tea is fully oxidized, causing it to turn black. Our green teas are less oxidized.

The factory is fully equipped to produce black and white teas. Our green teas require heating to activate the enzymes, while for white teas, there is no heating process. Quality is what we stand for at all points of our processing.

Quality control

All staff are trained every season. We also follow the code of practice for food safety and quality, and worker health, safety and welfare. Our factory is ISO 9001 (2008) and will soon be HACCP compliant. Our workers operate within very strict hygiene standards.

Our tea is packaged in our Head Office Factory in Yangon

“If I am not at the head office in Yangon or traveling to meet clients, I am in the factory or walking through the tea farms. Or climbing the mountains to look over the tea fields, valleys, and rivers. This land has my heart and inspires me.”
