Ginger

Diversification counts in our company. We sell chemical-free ginger powder and ginger tea.

Myanmar is seventh in worldwide ginger production with 5,000 hectares (ha) of cultivated area and 60,000 tons in production. Due to its favourable soil and climate, ginger from southern Myanmar contributes 85% of total production, with 63% from southern Shan State.

Ginger is a major cash crop and source of household income. It also provides seasonal employment as ginger production is labour intensive.

Harvest is from September to December. Some farmers harvest once, usually in October, while some harvest several times, even until summer. When the plant is fully mature, the leaves turn yellow. It is then harvested manually with a bamboo fork, avoiding metal tools that could damage the rhizome.

Ginger root is sent to another factory to process to dry to powder. Ginger is very mild and not spicy, making it a refreshing drink. We suggest 5 grams of ginger powder in 100 ml of hot water; in 3 minutes, it is ready to drink.

Coffee

Our farmers intercrop ginger, organic tea, and Arabica coffee over 100 ha in Alelchaung village in southern Shan State. This area is 19 km from Pindaya and known for its vibrant cobalt lake and natural waterfalls. It is a popular tourist area.

The climate is cool, above 1,200m ASL. Most of the coffee is Catuai variety (90%) with some Caturra, Catimor, and Typica.

In 2021, our village participated in the USAID Value Chains for Rural Development project, implemented by Winrock International. This project equipped our farmers, in particular women, with good agricultural practices (GAP) and processing skills for fully washed, sun dried, and honey processed coffee. They have clean, sweet, and honey aromas.

We are delighted to bring our coffee to local, regional and international markets. Our farmers work hard to ensure they get quality coffee and be a success. As we grow as a group, we will benefit from increased economic development together.

Ginger

Our Pickled Tea Leaves and Spicy and Sour Laphet line is a fermented tea leaf often used as a salad. We also produce assorted fried peas, beans and nuts as a garnish to sprinkle on top.

Managing Director, Mrs. Nay Che Myat Htun, and Ms. Daw Nay Che Myat Htun, wanted to share our laphet products with more customers around the world. They creatively drew on the idea of making products like a ‘pesto sauce’ that could be used with different foods.

We now produce lemon laphet, tomato laphet, and olive laphet that can be stirred through pasta or curries or spread on sandwiches.

They have a variety of uses in both cold or warm dishes and can be stored in the fridge once opened. This simple addition decreases preparation time and adds extra flavour that brightens up every dish. The ingredients are healthy, using fresh, local tomatoes and lemons, and olives imported from Australia.

Tea gift set

To honour three generations of Maw Shan company, my sister and Managing Director, Mrs. Daw Nay Che Myat Htun, developed the Maw Shan Mahar gift set. Each box is an amazing opportunity to taste these flavours from times past to current tea trends.

Mahar Gift Tea set: Five different kinds of tea: Sun Dried Tea, Glutinous Flavour Tea, Green Tea, Gold Tea, and Red Tea.

Packing design: We worked with a Yangon University art student to depict every detail of our ancient Myanmar tea culture. Tea was used as a peace offering between kingdoms, an expression of hospitality from our fertile homelands. See here.
